Jansem : humanist expressionist

Throughout his long career of more than sixty years, Jean Jansem has constantly and coherently surfed on the waves of both reality and illusion. Beyond his undeniable gift as drawer and colorist, he has always been in search of the most profound human expression to transpose on the canvas. His work is marked by powerful life dramas and conveys the originality of a challenging vision. The artist portrays Man: he is in quest of his truth. Sensitive observer of the misery of simple european people in his after-Second World War beginnings, the painter has since unceasingly depicted a more expressionist, more imaginary tragi-comic world. In his relentlessness to evolve his art, Jansem rejects the easy way out and craves for new challenges. "I would like to achieve the synthesis between that which is æsthetic and that which is not." And one falls under the spell, through the power of the painter’s non-indulgent vision driven by true humanism.
